The 2017 Jeep Wrangler is one of the most exciting vehicles ever made. If you step up to the Rubicon level, you get best-in-class capability. Which Wrangler is right for you will depend on how much off-road adventure you are planning.
Wranglers, including the Rubicon edition, have a 3.6-liter V6 under the hood. Drivers will appreciate 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. A four-wheel drivetrain provides high- and low-range gearing to help with off-roading. The maximum tow ratings are 2,000 pounds for the two-door Wrangler and 3,500 pounds for the four-door Wrangler Unlimited. A manual transmission is standard, but a five-speed automatic is an option. Hill descent control and hill start assist are also on the menu.
A different four-wheel drivetrain is standard on the Rubicon. Its more advanced capability delivers the torque needed for tough, yet slow movements on the trail. It also has an upgraded transfer case that’s durable enough for the challenges Rubicon drivers face. An extra-low crawl ratio improves the vehicle’s capability when faced with rough, rocky terrain. Rubicons earned the title 4×4 of the Decade from Four Wheeler magazine.
Wranglers are two-door, four-person vehicles with a modest cargo hold. Wrangler Unlimited are bigger, five-person vehicles with four doors and a larger cargo hold. Athletic curb appeal is heightened by its high ground clearance and high-mounted bumpers. In addition to the removable softtop, you can enjoy removable doors and a fold-down windshield. Skids plates ensure that vital parts aren’t destroyed by debris. The eight-speaker sound system has an auxiliary audio jack and a CD player. The Sport has the basics such as a folding rear seat and adjustable driver’s seat.
Rubicons add special tires, bigger wheels, LED automatic headlamps, and a heavy-duty front axle. It also wears rock rails for greater protection on the trail. Choices include a body-colored or black hardtop as well as available plastic side windows with half doors. The interior has a leather-wrapped steering wheel and available dark saddle seats. Shoppers get a year of SiriusXM and more speakers. They can also choose the UConnect touchscreen system with streaming audio. A Rubicon package bundles leather upholstery, automatic climate control and heated front seats. With the Rubicon Hard Rock, the exterior dresses in black wheels, special trim, steel bumpers, and a Power Dome hood. It also has red tow hooks and upgraded rock rails. The interior wears black leather upholstery and has an Alpine sound system.
Whether its the regular Wrangler or the Wrangler Rubicon, the Jeep is engineered for prevention and protection. Airbags are essentials, even in this open air ride. The vehicle’s tough build helps deflect impact and soften its reach into the cabin. Although it is geared for adventure, it still has plenty of electronic traction and stability controls. These utilize brake redistribution and throttle reduction to achieve balance and safer stops. The four-wheel drivetrain also does its part, providing traction on slippery surfaces. Hydraulic brake boosters improve travel by shortening the time needed for a safe stop.
